A New little vlog about numeric associations with Tarot

I'm continuing to enjoy the medium of vlogging (video blogging), here's another installment of suggestions in learning to identify patterns and associations with Tarot. In this case particularly working with numbers. For more videos check out the link on the right of my own Youtube selections as well as some videos from other sources that I will be adding. Hope everyone is staying warm and peaceful over this holiday season.

Two New Vlogs on Tarot

Hi everybody, it's a crisp clear cold but but lovely day here in Winnipeg. I'm enjoying the pace of  work as we move into the pre-holiday season. This time of year can be hectic and fast paced one moment and slow and reflective the next. People are busy, some with jobs that have high level holiday stress. I will be adjusting my schedule to accommodate as best I can, the many friends and patrons that want to come in over the holiday season but I strongly recommend booking ahead near the end of December to ensure a time that is convenient and relaxed for you.

Here are two new Tarot Vlogs, the first on relating the Tarot's elements to our lives and the second on the importance of Tarot Journalling and using the cards to illustrate our lives, building our own associations along with study and a bit about the trans formative effect these symbols start to have in our lives.

Hope everyone is warm and cozy, looking forward to sharing more soon!

Remembrance Day

Thought I'd share this here, (funny how things come to me). I should mention I have a very diverse circle of friends, with very divergent feelings on a lot of things. The following is just my own perspective on today, originally posted to my Facebook page, but felt I'd share it here too:

"Observing Remembrance day is not pro war or pro military (unless you choose to make it so). What would happen if we paused for a moment of silence every day not to be patriotic, not to be pro or con this or that, but to recognise the cost and privilege of freedom, to not be so smug as to think it's given by divine right to some and not to others, but by standing up not just for ourselves but for others who are suffering, oppressed or being taken advantage of? Like pausing over the food we eat, like being grateful for shelter and for understanding. Honoring something doesn't mean you take a position, it means you stand over a grave and recognise something significant lies here, the alternative is like paving it over for parking." -Trev.

What's new (and another vlog post)

Lots of further change going on, both in the practice of my own work and in the primary location I am reading at these days. Elemental Book And Curiosity Shop continues to offer lots of inspiring things from incense and crystals, jewellry and various spiritual and metaphysical tools as well as books reflecting a variety of faiths and practices, some works by local artists and artisans and now the interesting addition of some vintage clothing and costumes! Dominique, the owner has been hard at work with some behind the scenes renovations and upgrades. Among other things, the basement will be available for some further work and intentional space. I'm looking forward to when she can have the crystal grids laid out again! Some additional display areas and space is being made for lots of new stock and many things people have been needing and asking for in their work and mindful, constructive practice, if you don't see what you need, be sure and ask. Dominique goes out of her way to be informed and supportive of various paths.

It's also delightful to be working cooperatively with other readers again, after a long period of working largely on my own. Dodie and Lisa both have their own unique approach to Tarot and Monica specializes in Angel Card readings. I am grateful to be part of a team that has been very supportive in a lot of the change that's been going on. I'm learning a lot on some new levels and it's exciting to be exploring some different formats as well as having access to a lot of transformative tools, information, study and different people's practices in the various faiths and areas of interest that come in, both in my own clients and fellow practitioners that come in looking for resources. Lots of constructive sharing. I am also looking forward to Brenda Johnson (astrologer) coming back from a six month stint teaching in China!

I did another little vlog (video blog) this morning about working with Tarot, here it is:

Well that's all for now, back to work, but drop by and see for yourself the great constructive things going on. Looking forward to hearing from and seeing you soon!

King Of Wands Reversed - "You're So Vain"

In relating the archetypes of Tarot to our common experience it used to be that readers would rely on well known people or figures from mythology and folklore to illustrate a point. Nowadays our references can come from a vast array of resources. I like to sometimes illustrate a card's meaning through what we know of famous people or things found in popular culture, like music, characters and situations found in books, film or other forms of media.

Part of what makes some characters, art or other forms of expression popular is our ability to relate to these things, what they speak to in our common experience and Tarot is partly a reassuring sense that others have encountered these things as well. All of our experiences are individual and unique, but there is a resonance and an ability to relate these things to what others have moved through.

When a court card is describing someone in the querant's life, I have to point out that the description is that person in relation to the querant. It is often the case that we are getting a message not only about the other person but also about what we have been seeking or needing to interact with in that situation.

Kings in Tarot seem to suggest people in a position of responsibility or authority, sometimes a predominance of kings can show that we, ourselves, are ready to take our place in that sense of responsibility. I often see a court card not just as a description of an external influence in the querant's life but also as a kind of "modality" that we are operating in. In this vein Pages are our own childlike sense of wonder and curiosity, Knights are our questing nature, relationships that have a sense of teamwork or a task/lesson oriented quality, often with a transitional (not necessarily transient or impermanent quality -some quests can be a lifelong adventure). Queens are sometimes situations that require nurture, the development or creative aspect with a transformative effect not just within but environmentally. These are just some of the associations that can be drawn.

So we have the opportunity to look at this sort of exchange when a court card comes up. When the signs around it, as well as the intuitive feel of the card suggests a positive exchange, it's like we are on the right wavelength with the person in question, we see results in growth, learning and contentment. Even an adversarial or opposing influence can be positive when we see what it is we are looking for and working with, but what about those exchanges that are troublesome, where something seems to be kicking up a fuss or causing discontent? this is when a card seems to be "ill aspected" or reversed. Please note that this is not so much about the card actually being physically upside down, sometimes that's just how it falls. What I am talking about here is the very definite sense of something being out of whack.

A good illustration of this is the experience of encountering the King Of Wands reversed. An enigmatic leader, someone with a lot of drive, but somewhat driven. An achiever (or at least he gives that appearance). Someone with a lot going for him but it's not very clear where it's all going. We tend to give this figure a lot of attention and sometimes the lesson is about giving up our own power. When we choose the most distracting person in the room it begs the question "what is it we are needing to be distracted from?" What is sitting in our own blind spot of worth or our own misplaced elements that cause us to be drawn into what can turn out o be a trap?

The key lies in the element itself. Wands are the suit that has to do with our sense of DOING, our goals, our constructiveness, our passionate drives to achieve but also to find contentment in the doing itself. When we look at the egoic side of it, wands can be a need for status, competitive or comparative unhealthy standing. A healthy King Of Wands is like a good natured athlete who cares about the sport, the team and the love of the game, he instills in others a love of the game and good sportsmanship, He isn't always having to be the star player and enjoys mentoring and encouraging others.
The unhealthy emanation is the sort of "big man on campus" who has to cut others down, someone invested in the trophies but not the game. Often with a narrow vision and a great concern about appearances.

In the drama of life, it would be pretty dull if people like this didn't show up from time to time, like all people, we can learn from "good bad examples". If we aren't secure in ourselves though, this can be a tough learning experience.

Carly Simon wrote a song in the 1970s about her disenchanting experiences around this sort of thing called "You're So Vain". No one knows for sure who it is about, there's been speculation about everyone from Mick Jagger and Nick Nolte to the front runner Warren Beatty (who has insisted it's about himself). Here is a link of her singing this (and by the way it is a more current version and she looks fabulously flawless and joyful decades later).

I think the following lines in the song are quite telling;  "you had me several years ago, when I was still quite naive" and "all of the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner", speak to our feelings of self uncertainty and the comparative worth we (briefly) feel in being someone that is wanted by someone that other people want. There IS hope though for all of us, the King included. I have worked with a lot of fellow men who have been through the brokenness of this kind of ego trap and have righted the reversal. We can start looking at our own stuff instead of being victims or villains. We don't have to buy into being something for others, but rather what we can be with them (a related post on this is "Discerning true worth" ). In Warren's case, maybe he got Carly's message, maybe a really strong Annette Bening helped or his enlightened sister Shirley Maclaine (both of whom embody strong and constructive Queen of Wands characteristics). He seems to have settled down.  I have found that part of the lesson is If you're going to take on a King (reversed or upright), be ready to look at where that energy sits within yourself.

The joys of modern technology!

I'm getting used to the great new booking system, even on a day off I can still arrange readings when you call (204) 504 9575, if I am not available you can leave a message and I return your call. Thanks to call forwarding, I can be going for a walk and still be doing this! Also people have the option of calling directly through the venue(s) that I am reading at.

Right now my primary location (that I am greatly enjoying) is Elemental Book and Curiosity Shop at 355 Langside St. (just steps from Portage) the number there is (204) 779 8900.

Thanks again too to Blackletter Books (my previous location) for passing along this contact info.

I am somewhat more flexible in terms of hours and as we get into the back to school season my schedule is prepared to accomodate with some morning and evening times available as well as extended times on Fridays and Saturdays. I am still (generally) working Tuesdays to Saturdays, with Sundays and Mondays being my weekend.

I look forward to seeing many familiar and new people in the next while, hope your summer is restful and constructive, mine has been an interesting adventure!

BIG CHANGES!!!

More news to come about further exciting changes. I am no longer reading at Blackletter books. This has been a tough decision but I have needed to move my residence to be closer to family and also am looking at ways to improve and upgrade services, so I now can be reached through a virtual office number at (204) 504 9575. When you call that number it forwards to wherever I am located and also allows you to leave a message (and I will call you back)  or to hear the contact number to book an appointment at whatever venue I am at that day. This is also the contact number for party/ group bookings and a number of other potentials in the works. This also allows for much greater flexibility of hours to serve you better! These are all things my clients have been requesting for some time and in terms of convenience, a better way to accomodate people's schedules and provide comfortable venues for private and group  readings, it seems to be working out well.

At present I am primarily based at Elemental Book and Curiosity Shop (this link takes you to Elemental's facebook page), 355 Langside St. You can book directly there as well by calling: (204)779 8900. The joint booking / shared calendar allows me to book your readings when the store is closed as well as allowing the store to book for me when I am doing readings! This aspect will be generally available at any venues I work with from now on.  I will be posting a great deal in the next while about Elemental, the resources they offer and the other readers that are also available there.
The Pictorial Tour is now up!

I do want to add further my deep appreciation to Blackletter for the great support I have been given there AND my deep gratitude for letting clients know how I can be reached. They are having a huge half price sale right now, definately worth checking out!

THANK YOU for your patience in all these growing pains and here's to new beginnings!

First attempt at "Vlogging"

I'm always interested in new ways of sharing and in response to some inquiries about internet accessibility, I'm taking some very cautious steps. This is my first "Vlog" (short for video blogging) entry. A bit awkward but I think I'm getting the hang of it. This was done at home in a room with good light, but I've since worked out how to do it from work so, hopefully I'll look a little more polished in future!
It's only 3 minutes long but I thought I'd stop before I got too tongue tied :)

On Blogradio tomorrow, March 30th!

I am honored to be a guest tomorrow on the blogradio show of Dr. Michael Likey. His (newly released) book and radio show bring together a number of modalities of inner work and he has some very interesting guests as well as lots of his own insight.
Although he is now based in BC, he has roots here in Winnipeg and our paths have crossed from time to time over the years. The show airs at 2:30 but there are podcasts archived that you can listen to at leisure. Here is the link:

This page will also link to his own website which covers the wide array of resources and services he offers.
I'm really looking forward to exploring this new (to me) medium of sharing!

Upcoming radio spot

Brenda Johnson has asked me to be an occaisonal guest on her radio show "These Changing Times" on local University Of Winnipeg radio station CKUW 95.9 FM, The show airs on Sundays at 1:30 PM and is generally about astrological trends and our changing world. Brenda is quite insightful and our discussions are always fun, with me usually sharing the trends I see in readings and the relationship of elements to Tarot and it's symbolism, as well as the issues I see people working through in the intuitive / psychic aspects of my work.

This month I will be on the February 12th  AND 19th shows, at 1:30PM. With Valentines Day coming up, we will be talking about relationships, romance, attraction and distraction, it should be a lot of fun! If you can't tune in at that time there are also podcasts available on the shows archive (usually available within 24 hrs of airing) that can be listened to online or downloaded. Here is the show's archive link:
